How long do vibrators last?
What decides a vibrator's lifespan, the signs it is time for a new one, what happens if it develops a fault and how to recycle an old toy responsibly.

It is a fair question to ask before you buy: how long do vibrators last? There is no single number, because it depends on how a toy is made, how often it is used and how it is looked after. What we can do is explain what wears out first, the signs that a toy is ready to retire, and the simple habits that keep it working well for as long as possible.
What decides how long a vibrator lasts?
Three parts matter, and they age at different rates:
| Part | How it ages | What helps it last |
|---|---|---|
| Outer material | Non-porous silicone and ABS are durable and stable | Gentle cleaning, compatible lube, dry storage |
| Rechargeable battery | Gradually holds less charge over many charging cycles | Charging at room temperature, not leaving it flat for months |
| Motor and buttons | Can wear with heavy use, or fail if water gets in | Respecting the water rating, careful storage |
In practice, the battery and motor usually decide a toy's lifespan, rather than the material. A well-made silicone or ABS body tends to outlast the electronics inside it.
Does the material affect lifespan?
Yes, a lot. Non-porous materials such as body-safe silicone and ABS do not absorb moisture, are easy to clean and keep their finish for a long time. The Duet Dual Massage Wand is made from soft-touch silicone, while the Rouge Lipstick Bullet has an ABS body. Porous materials, which we do not sell, can degrade, discolour or hold on to residue much sooner. Our guide to body-safe materials explains the difference in more detail.
Silicone does have one weakness: silicone-based lube can damage silicone toys over time. Stick to a water-based lube with silicone toys, as our guide to lube and compatibility explains.
How long does a vibrator's battery last over its life?
Rechargeable toys use built-in batteries that slowly lose capacity as they go through charging cycles, which is normal for any rechargeable device. You may notice each charge lasting a little less time after a long period of regular use. A few habits help:
- Charge fully before first use, as the instructions for our toys ask.
- Charge at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sunlight.
- If you will not use it for a while, top it up every few months rather than leaving it completely flat.
For how long a single charge runs and how to charge safely, see our guide to charging and battery safety.
When should I replace a vibrator?
It is time for a new toy if you notice any of these:
- A sticky, tacky or greasy surface that does not wash off. This can mean the material has started to break down.
- Cracks, tears or splits in the surface, especially near seams or buttons, where residue can collect.
- Discolouration or a smell that stays after a thorough clean.
- A battery that swells, gets hot or smells unusual while charging. Unplug it straight away and stop using it.
- Water damage. If a splash-proof toy has had water inside and does not recover after drying, retire it.
- Runtime that has dropped right off, so it no longer lasts long enough to enjoy.
If a toy just seems weaker or will not switch on, it may not need replacing at all. Our guide to what to do when your vibrator is not working covers the easy fixes first.
If your skin ever feels irritated after using a toy, stop using it. The NHS explains that contact dermatitis is most commonly caused by irritants such as soaps and detergents, and suggests speaking to a pharmacist if it is troubling you.
How can I make my vibrator last longer?
Most of what helps is simple and takes seconds:
- Clean it after every use with warm water and mild, unscented soap or a toy cleaner. See how to clean your vibrator.
- Respect the water rating. A splash-proof toy such as the Rouge (IPX5) can be rinsed but not submerged, while an IPX7 toy such as the Lune Rechargeable Mini Bullet is happy in the bath.
- Dry it fully, especially around charging points, before charging or storing.
- Store it in a pouch, away from sunlight and not touching other toys. Our storage guide has ideas.
What if my vibrator stops working early?
Then it should be put right. Faulty items are always covered, opened or not, under your Consumer Rights Act 2015 rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 you can reject a faulty item within 30 days of delivery. Email hello@vibrator.toys with your order number and our UK-based customer care team will sort it out discreetly. See our returns policy for the details.
How do I dispose of an old vibrator?
Please do not put it in the household bin. Vibrators contain batteries and electronics, and Recycle Your Electricals warns that hidden batteries can spark fires in bin lorries and recycling centres. Its locator shows where to recycle anything with a plug, battery or cable near you. Give the toy a clean first, and pop it in a plain bag if you prefer privacy. More on materials and care is on our materials and cleaning page, and the care and safety hub has every guide in one place.
Questions, answered
How long do vibrators usually last?
There is no fixed lifespan. It depends mostly on the motor and rechargeable battery, and on how the toy is cleaned, charged and stored. Non-porous silicone and ABS bodies stay in good condition for a long time.
When should I replace my vibrator?
Replace it if the surface turns sticky, cracks or tears, if a smell or discolouration will not wash off, or if the battery swells, overheats or barely holds a charge.
Does silicone lube shorten a vibrator's life?
It can damage silicone toys over time. Use a water-based lube with silicone toys to keep the surface smooth and intact.
Can I recycle an old vibrator?
Yes. Like any small electrical item, take it to an electricals recycling point rather than the bin, because the battery inside can cause fires if crushed.
