If you have started browsing, you have probably noticed there are many types of vibrators, and the names do not always explain much. The good news is that most toys fall into a handful of simple families, and once you know them, choosing becomes much easier. This guide explains each type in plain language, what it tends to suit, and which ones we stock today.

What are the main types of vibrators?

Think of it in two layers. First comes the shape, which decides how a toy feels and how you hold it. Then come the features, such as charging, waterproofing and controls, which can apply to almost any shape.

What is a bullet vibrator?

A bullet is the classic small vibrator: slim, smooth and simple, usually with one or two buttons. It is many people's first toy because it is easy to understand, easy to store and gentle to start with. The Bijou Classic Bullet is a good example, at 90 x 18 mm and just 20 g, with ten settings and a published noise rating of under 50 dB. Our guide to what a bullet vibrator is goes into more detail.

What is a lipstick vibrator?

A lipstick vibrator is a bullet designed to look like a lipstick, so it blends into a make-up bag. It is a style rather than a separate technology, chosen mainly for discretion. The Rouge Lipstick Bullet is our version: 89 x 18 mm with an angled tip for focused sensation, ten vibration settings and USB charging. If privacy matters most to you, our guide to choosing a discreet vibrator compares the options.

What is a mini capsule vibrator?

Some small toys are rounder rather than long and slim, designed to sit comfortably in the palm. They tend to have a single button that switches on and moves through the settings. The Lune Rechargeable Mini Bullet is a smooth capsule with ten vibration modes, USB charging and an IPX7 waterproof rating, so it is happy in the bath or shower.

What is a wand-style massager?

Wand-style massagers have a larger, rounded head that spreads vibration over a broader area, which many people enjoy for full-body massage as well as more personal moments. Full-size wands can be quite large, but smaller designs exist too. The Duet Dual Massage Wand is a dual-ended take on the idea: a rounded massage head at one end and a gently curved tail with its own motor at the other, each with its own button. It is made from soft-touch silicone, rated IPX7 waterproof and under 50 dB.

Bullet vs other vibrators: which type should I choose?

There is no right answer, only what feels right for you. A few honest pointers:

  • New to toys? A bullet is a gentle, affordable place to start. Our guide to choosing your first vibrator walks through it step by step.
  • Privacy first? A lipstick style or a slim bullet is easiest to keep out of sight.
  • Prefer broad, all-over sensation? A wand-style massager may suit you better than a small, focused bullet.
  • Want variety? A dual-ended design gives you two different feels in one toy.

Do features like charging and waterproofing count as types?

Not really, but they matter just as much. They apply across shapes, so decide on a shape first and then choose your features:

  • Power. Rechargeable toys use USB or magnetic charging; others take a battery. See rechargeable vs battery.
  • Water resistance. Splash-proof toys rinse clean; fully waterproof (IPX7 and above) toys can go in the bath. See waterproof ratings explained.
  • Controls. Buttons on the toy, a wireless remote or a phone app. See our guide to app and remote toys.
  • Materials. Look for non-porous, body-safe materials such as silicone and ABS. Our guide to body-safe materials explains why.

Where should I start?

If you are still unsure, start small. A classic bullet teaches you what kind of sensation and intensity you enjoy, which makes any future choice easier. Our beginners hub has more friendly guides, including using a vibrator for the first time.

Questions, answered

What are the different kinds of vibrators?

The main kinds are bullets, lipstick-style bullets, mini capsules, wand-style massagers, app or remote-controlled toys and larger shapes. Features such as charging and waterproofing apply across all of them.

Which type of vibrator is best for beginners?

Many people start with a bullet, because it is small, simple and gentle. It helps you learn what you enjoy before you decide whether you want something different.

Is a lipstick vibrator different from a bullet?

Not really. A lipstick vibrator is a bullet designed to look like a lipstick, so it is easy to keep discreet. The way it works is the same.

What is the difference between a bullet and a wand?

A bullet is small and gives focused sensation. A wand-style massager has a larger head that spreads vibration over a broader area, which many people enjoy for massage.
