How to choose a vibrator

Power, speeds and patterns explained

What speeds, patterns, rumbly and buzzy motors and boost buttons really mean, so you can choose a vibrator with the right intensity for you.

"Powerful" is one of the most used words in toy descriptions, and one of the least helpful on its own. Power is personal: what feels wonderfully strong to one person may feel too much for another. This guide explains the terms you will see, so you can choose a toy with the right kind of intensity for you.

What are vibrator speeds?

Speeds are steady vibration levels, from low to high. A toy with three speeds offers low, medium and high. A toy with ten or twelve speeds moves between them in smaller steps, giving you finer control.

More speeds is not automatically better. If you know exactly what you like, a handful of well-spaced levels may be all you need. If you enjoy adjusting gradually, more speeds lets you find a level that feels just right.

What are vibration patterns?

Patterns are pre-set rhythms: pulses, waves, escalations and combinations. They add variety, and many people enjoy switching between a steady speed and a gentle pattern.

In practice, most people end up with one or two favourite patterns. A toy with four or five patterns gives plenty of choice; toys with ten to twenty are lovely if you enjoy exploring.

Rumbly or buzzy: what is the difference?

This is the most useful distinction of all, and the one that numbers do not capture.

Buzzy vibration feels lighter, faster and more surface-level. It comes from smaller motors spinning quickly. Many classic minis have a buzzy feel.

Rumbly vibration feels deeper and more resonant, as though it travels further. It usually comes from larger motors spinning a little more slowly. Many people describe rumbly vibration as richer and more satisfying, especially at higher settings.

Neither is better. Some people love the crisp precision of a buzzy toy; others prefer the depth of a rumbly one. Product descriptions usually mention it. The Duet Dual Massage Wand has a soft, rounded head made for broad, rumbling vibration, and a curved tail with its own motor for something more focused.

What is a boost button?

A boost button jumps straight to the top intensity, then back again. It is handy when you want a little more without clicking through every level. Not every toy has one, so check the product page if it matters to you.

Does battery type affect power?

Power source affects intensity more than people expect. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries generally deliver steadier power than disposable batteries, so rechargeable toys often feel stronger and stay consistent through a session. Battery toys can feel slightly softer as the battery runs down. Our guide to rechargeable vs battery goes into more detail.

Power and noise

Stronger motors can be a little louder. If you share a home, it is worth checking the noise level alongside the settings. The Bijou Classic Bullet and the dual-motor Duet Dual Massage Wand are supplier-rated at 50 dB or less and under 50 dB respectively, quieter than a normal conversation. See noise levels explained.

How do you find the right intensity?

A few gentle suggestions:

  • Start low. Whatever toy you choose, begin on the lowest setting and work up slowly. Vibration can feel more intense than you expect.
  • Take breaks. Pausing and switching settings keeps sensation feeling fresh.
  • Notice what you enjoy. Steady or pulsing? Gentle or deep? Our guide to finding what you like has unhurried ideas.

Which suits you?

  • New to toys, or prefer gentle sensation? Three to five speeds with a buzzy, soft motor is a lovely start. See choosing your first vibrator.
  • Know you like stronger sensation? Look for a larger motor described as rumbly, ten or more speeds, and perhaps a boost button.
  • Love variety? An app-controlled toy lets you create your own patterns. See app and remote control explained.

Whatever you choose arrives in plain, unbranded packaging, with "BH Commerce Ltd" on your statement.

Questions, answered

How many speeds should a vibrator have?

There is no right number. Three to five speeds suits most beginners, while ten or more gives finer control if you enjoy adjusting gradually.

What is the difference between rumbly and buzzy vibration?

Rumbly vibration feels deeper and more resonant, usually from a larger motor. Buzzy vibration feels lighter and more surface-level, usually from a smaller, faster motor.

What does a boost button do?

It jumps straight to the highest intensity and back again, so you can have a little more without clicking through every setting.

Are rechargeable vibrators more powerful?

Often, yes. Rechargeable batteries generally deliver steadier power than disposable ones, so rechargeable toys tend to feel stronger and more consistent.
