Solo pleasure, at your own pace

How to make time just for you: setting the mood, getting comfortable and exploring a vibrator with curiosity rather than pressure.

Time spent on your own pleasure is time well spent. It can be relaxing, grounding and a lovely way to get to know what you enjoy. Yet many of us rush it, or feel we should not be doing it at all. This guide is an invitation to slow down, get comfortable and treat solo time as the gentle self-care it can be.

There is nothing you need to achieve. Some sessions will feel wonderful, some will simply feel nice, and some you will stop halfway through because you would rather have a cup of tea. All of that is completely fine.

How do you make time and space for yourself?

The biggest difference often comes from simply choosing a moment when you will not be interrupted. A quiet evening, a lazy weekend morning or a long bath can all work. A few small touches help you settle:

  • Silence notifications or leave your phone in another room.
  • Make the room warm, with soft lighting or a candle if you like.
  • Put on music, a podcast or nothing at all, whatever helps you switch off.
  • Keep a towel, a little water-based lube and your toy within easy reach.

If you share your home, a quiet toy makes it easier to relax. Most of our bullets sit at around 36 to 42 decibels, roughly the hum of a quiet library. Our guide to noise levels explains what those numbers mean in practice.

Why start on a low setting?

When you first switch on a vibrator, begin at the lowest setting. It is tempting to jump straight to the strongest speed, but gentle vibration gives your body time to warm up and helps you notice what feels good. You can always go up; it is harder to enjoy something that started out too intense.

A small, simple toy like the Bijou Classic Bullet is ideal here. With ten settings and nothing else to learn, there is very little to think about, so your attention can stay on how things feel rather than which button to press.

Try moving the toy slowly, changing the pressure, or simply holding still and breathing. Many people find that light, indirect contact feels nicer at first, with firmer pressure becoming more enjoyable as they relax.

How do you work out what you enjoy?

Solo time is the perfect chance to be curious. You might like to ask yourself, without judgement:

  1. Do I prefer steady vibration or a pattern that pulses or waves?
  2. Does a gentle, buzzy feeling or a deeper, rumbly one feel better today?
  3. Do I like to stay on one setting, or change things as I go?
  4. What helps me relax: music, warmth, a particular time of day?

Your answers may change from day to day, and that is normal. Our guide to finding what you like has more ideas for exploring with curiosity.

Think about shape and comfort

Comfort matters as much as power. A toy that sits naturally in your hand is easier to relax with. The Rouge Lipstick Bullet has a slim, lipstick-sized body and an angled tip that many people find easy to hold and position.

If you love baths, a fully waterproof toy opens up a whole new kind of unwinding. The Lune Rechargeable Mini Bullet is rated IPX7, so it is happy to be submerged in warm water. See waterproof ratings explained to check what each rating means.

Let go of pressure

Many people find solo time more enjoyable when they stop aiming for a particular outcome. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breathing and to sensation. If nothing much happens, that is not a failure; you have still spent time being kind to yourself.

Stress, tiredness, hormones and simply having a lot on your mind can all affect how responsive you feel. If you notice changes that worry you, speaking to your GP is always a sensible step. Our stress and sleep guide also looks at the link between rest and relaxation.

What should you do afterwards?

When you are done, give your toy a quick clean with warm water and mild, unscented soap or a toy cleaner, let it dry and pop it back in its pouch. Our guide to cleaning your vibrator walks through each step.

And when it comes to buying your next toy, every order arrives in plain packaging, with BH Commerce Ltd on your bank statement. Private by default.

Questions, answered

Is it normal to enjoy solo time with a vibrator?

Yes, completely. Surveys suggest vibrator use is very common, and enjoying your own company is a healthy, ordinary part of life for many people. There is no right or wrong amount.

What setting should I start on?

Start on the lowest speed and the steadiest pattern, then build up slowly if you want more. Gentle vibration often feels better at first and helps you notice what you enjoy.

Do I need lube for solo play?

Not always, but many people find a little water-based lube adds comfort and makes vibration feel smoother. Water-based lube is safe with every toy we sell.

What if I feel self-conscious?

That is a common feeling and it often fades with time. Choose a private, comfortable moment, start gently and remember there is no performance and no audience. You are simply exploring what feels good to you.
